When some talks about regenerative medicine, they are talking about a form of medicine that basically speeds up your own natural healing process. Stem cells are used in regenerative medicine because they are a natural source of cells from the body and when introduced to certain diseased or damaged cells, they go to work by replacing or regenerating new, healthy cells. Stem cells from cord blood are typically not rejected by the immune system of the donor in which they derive. This is important because cord blood stem cell treatments and transplants are not as successful or completely fail if the body rejects the implanted cells. This can also be important if a family member needs or uses the donors cord blood stem cells.
Many successful transplants have saved the lives of parents and siblings using cord blood stem cells. As time moves along, so does the discovery of other diseases and illnesses treatable with cord blood stem cells through regenerative medicine. Some current studies with cerebral palsy, heart disease, and type 1 diabetes have shown success in recent research. The video link below shows recent success in studies with cerebral palsy. http://www.crscm.org/information_video_cut5.asp
